Doctor-Led Aesthetics in Brighton: What the Difference Actually Means
Updated: Oct 8
"Doctor-led" appears on a lot of clinic websites in Brighton, and it is worth knowing what it actually means — and what it does not.

The regulatory position in the UK
In the UK, non-surgical aesthetic treatments are far less regulated than most patients assume. Dermal filler can legally be administered by someone with no medical qualification at all. Botulinum toxin is a prescription-only medicine, so it must be prescribed by a qualified prescriber — but the prescriber and the injector are not always the same person, and remote prescribing without a face-to-face assessment has been a longstanding concern in the sector.
This is changing, but slowly. In the meantime the responsibility for checking sits with the patient.
What medical training actually adds
Assessment rather than order-taking. A request for cheek filler can turn out to be volume loss, skin laxity, weight change or an underlying condition. Different problems, different answers.
Recognising what is not cosmetic. Moles, skin lesions, unexplained sweating, hair loss and skin changes sometimes need a diagnosis rather than a treatment.
Prescribing and complication management. Vascular occlusion is the complication everyone fears with filler. It is rare, it is time-critical, and managing it requires drugs, training and a plan — not a phone call to someone else.
Knowing when to decline. The most useful thing a clinician can say is that a treatment will not achieve what you want.
What it does not mean
It does not mean the treatment will be better in every case, and it does not mean a well-trained nurse prescriber is a worse choice — many are excellent. It also does not automatically mean higher prices. What it should mean is that a medically qualified person assesses you, treats you, and is equipped to deal with it if something goes wrong.
Questions worth asking any clinic
Who will actually be performing my treatment, and what is their qualification?
Who prescribes the botulinum toxin, and will they see me in person?
What happens if I have a complication — this evening, or at the weekend?
Do you have hyaluronidase on site, and who is trained to use it?
What insurance do you hold, and are you registered with a recognised professional body?
A clinic that answers these easily is telling you something. So is one that does not.
How this works at Dr Selvi Clinic
Every treatment at the clinic is performed by an ECFMG-registered doctor with over a decade of medical experience. Consultations are free and are used to establish what is actually going on, including saying when nothing needs doing. Dermatology equipment is on site, so skin concerns can be examined properly rather than guessed at, and ultrasound is available for filler assessment.
The clinic is on London Road in Brighton and sees patients from across Brighton and Hove, Hove, Worthing, Lewes and the wider Sussex area.
Common questions
Is doctor-led treatment more expensive?
Not necessarily. Our current prices are on the price list — they sit in the normal range for Brighton.
Do I need a doctor for a simple cosmetic injectable?
Not by law. Whether you want one is a judgement about what happens in the small proportion of cases that do not go to plan.
What should I bring to a first consultation?
A list of your medications, any relevant medical history, and details of any previous aesthetic treatment including approximate dates and products if you have them.
