What Is Medical Microneedling?
Medical microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, uses a device fitted with fine, sterile needles to create controlled micro-injuries in the skin. This triggers the body's natural wound-healing response, stimulating the production of new collagen and elastin — the proteins that give skin its firmness, smoothness, and elasticity.
Unlike home-use dermarollers, medical-grade microneedling uses adjustable needle depths and is performed under clinical conditions, allowing for deeper, more controlled treatment with significantly better results.
What Can Microneedling Treat?
Medical microneedling is effective for acne scars (including ice pick, boxcar, and rolling scars), fine lines and wrinkles, enlarged pores, stretch marks, uneven skin tone and texture, sun damage and mild pigmentation, and surgical or traumatic scars.
It works on virtually all skin types and tones, making it one of the most inclusive skin treatments available. For darker skin tones, microneedling is often preferred over laser treatments because it carries a lower risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
Medical-Grade vs At-Home Devices
Home dermarollers typically use shorter needles (0.2 to 0.5mm) that can only affect the very surface of the skin. Medical microneedling devices used at Dr Selvi Clinic can reach depths of up to 2.5mm, allowing treatment of deeper skin concerns such as scarring and significant textural issues.
Crucially, medical needling is performed in a sterile environment by a qualified doctor, reducing the risk of infection and ensuring the treatment is tailored to your skin's specific needs.
The Treatment Experience
After a thorough consultation and skin assessment, a topical anaesthetic cream is applied to ensure comfort. The microneedling device is then passed over the treatment area in a systematic pattern. The entire procedure takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes depending on the size of the area.
Post-treatment, the skin will appear red — similar to moderate sunburn — for 24 to 48 hours. Some patients experience mild swelling and sensitivity. Most people can return to work within 1 to 2 days, and makeup can typically be applied after 24 hours.
A course of 3 to 6 sessions, spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart, is usually recommended for optimal results. Improvements in skin texture and tone become progressively more visible with each session.
Microneedling with PRP
For enhanced results, microneedling can be combined with PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) therapy. The micro-channels created by needling allow the PRP to penetrate deep into the skin, amplifying the regenerative effect. This combination is particularly effective for acne scarring and overall skin rejuvenation.
Dr Selvi can advise you on whether a combined treatment would be beneficial during your consultation.
