WHAT IT IS Enzymatic fat dissolving at Dr Selvi Clinic in Brighton is a doctor-led injectable treatment for small, localised pockets of fat that have not responded to diet and exercise, such as under the chin. An enzyme-based product is injected into the fat to help break down fat cells, which the body then clears gradually over the following weeks. It is not a weight-loss treatment and is not suitable for larger areas of fat or for loose skin. No. It is for small, defined pockets of fat in people who are close to a stable weight. It will not reduce overall body weight, and larger areas need a different approach. Which areas can be treated? The area under the chin is the most common. Small deposits on the jowls, flanks, abdomen, bra-line, inner thighs and upper arms may also be suitable. Dr Selvi assesses whether your area is likely to respond. How soon will I see a change? Swelling comes first and settles over two to four weeks. Any reduction appears gradually over the following weeks as the body clears the treated fat. Will the fat come back? Treated fat cells are cleared by the body, but the fat cells that remain can still enlarge if you gain weight. Keeping a stable weight matters for the result. Does it hurt? Most people feel a mild burning or tingling sensation during the injections, and the area is tender and swollen for some days afterwards. Numbing cream can be applied. Who should not have it? It is not given during pregnancy or breastfeeding, over infection or a skin condition at the site, or where there is an allergy to any ingredient. It is not suitable for significant loose skin, for larger areas of fat or as a substitute for weight loss. Swelling, tenderness, firmness, redness, bruising and temporary numbness are common. Less commonly, lumps, infection, an uneven contour or an allergic reaction can occur, and rarely a nerve can be irritated, which under the chin can briefly affect the smile.
