Hair Treatment
Doctor-led scalp treatment for thinning hair, planned after the cause of the hair loss has been assessed.
Service Description
WHAT IT IS Hair treatment at Dr Selvi Clinic in Brighton is a doctor-led scalp treatment for thinning hair, given after the cause of your hair loss has been assessed. It is mainly a mesotherapy-style injectable — vitamins, amino acids, peptides and hyaluronic acid delivered into the scalp — and can include an exosome product or microneedling. Hair loss is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Pattern hair loss, sudden shedding after illness, childbirth or stress, and patchy or scarring hair loss all behave differently, and treatments that help one cause do nothing for another. Dr Selvi takes a history, examines the scalp with a dermatoscope and, where indicated, arranges blood tests through your GP. PRP is a separate option, and the exact formulation is chosen at consultation. WHY PEOPLE CHOOSE IT It suits people with early to moderate pattern thinning who would rather not have blood taken, or who want to alternate with PRP as part of a plan. Because diagnosis comes first, you will be told if scalp treatment is not the answer and pointed to the right care. WHAT WE AIM FOR In pattern hair loss, the aim is to slow shedding, thicken existing fine hairs and modestly improve density where follicles are still active, judged over months. Scalp treatment does not revive follicles that have been dormant for years, regrow a bald crown or stop the underlying process. WHO IT SUITS · Early to moderate pattern thinning in men and women · A widening parting, or thinning at the temples or crown · Preferring not to have blood taken for PRP · Alternating with PRP as part of a plan · Supporting a medical plan already in place TREATMENT DETAILS Assessment: History, scalp dermatoscopy and blood tests through your GP where indicated Numbing: Numbing cream; a fine needle is used Technique: Small injections into the thinning areas of the scalp Options: Scalp mesotherapy, exosome product or microneedling; PRP is a separate treatment Downtime: Tender scalp for one to three days; pinpoint marks; occasional bruising Hair washing: From 24 hours, with a mild shampoo Avoid for 48 hours: Gym, sauna and swimming; leave colouring for at least a week Review: Progress assessed at around three to four months Course: Planned at consultation, with maintenance agreed at review FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Will it work for me? It depends on the cause. Shedding after illness, iron deficiency or thyroid change usually needs the trigger corrected rather than scalp injections, and patchy or scarring hair loss needs referral. Scalp treatment is most useful in early to moderate pattern thinning. Do I need blood tests? Often, particularly for women, for sudden shedding or where the history suggests a nutritional or thyroid cause. Dr Selvi advises which tests are relevant; these are usually arranged through your GP. How is it different from PRP? PRP uses a concentrate prepared from your own blood. This treatment uses a prepared formulation, which suits people who would rather not have blood taken. The two are sometimes alternated within a plan. How soon will I see a difference? Hair grows slowly. Change in shedding and hair quality is judged over months, using clinic photographs at review from around three to four months. Results vary between individuals. Does it hurt? The scalp is numbed with cream and a fine needle is used. Most patients describe it as uncomfortable rather than painful. Who should not have it? It is not given during pregnancy or breastfeeding, over active scalp infection or inflammation, with poorly controlled bleeding disorders or anticoagulation, or after a previous reaction to a similar formulation. What are the risks? Tenderness, bruising, swelling and headache can occur, and mild forehead swelling sometimes follows treatment near the hairline. A short-lived increase in shedding a few weeks in is recognised and settles. Infection and allergic reaction to an ingredient are uncommon. Will I need to keep having treatment? Pattern hair loss is a lifelong tendency that can be slowed and partly reversed, not switched off. When treatment stops, gradual thinning resumes. Medical treatments for pattern hair loss are also discussed factually at consultation. Who will treat me? All treatments at Dr Selvi Clinic are carried out by Dr Selvi, a doctor, after a face-to-face consultation and an assessment of your suitability.
