WHAT IT IS A high-frequency ultrasound scan that images moles, cysts, lumps and lesions in the layers beneath the skin. Where a dermatoscope shows the surface in magnified detail, ultrasound shows depth, internal structure and blood flow — information the eye cannot obtain. No. Ultrasound uses sound waves, not radiation. It is the same technology used in pregnancy scanning and is safe to repeat as often as needed. Can it tell me whether a mole is cancerous? Ultrasound is an assessment tool, not a substitute for biopsy. It shows depth, borders and blood supply — features that help determine how concerning a lesion is and whether biopsy is warranted. Where there is any suspicion, Dr Selvi will refer you appropriately. Should I have this or a dermatoscopy? They answer different questions and often work best together. Dermatoscopy examines surface pattern and pigment; ultrasound examines depth and internal structure. Dr Selvi will advise which your case needs. How is this different from a scan at the hospital? The technology is comparable; the difference is access and focus.
