WHAT IT IS A very small amount of dilute anti-inflammatory medication injected directly into a painful acne cyst or nodule. The inflammation typically subsides within 24 to 48 hours, and the lesion flattens rather than continuing its usual weeks-long course. WHY PEOPLE CHOOSE IT A deep cyst is painful, highly visible, lasts for weeks and is the type of acne lesion most likely to leave a permanent scar. Injecting it shortens that course dramatically — which relieves the pain, and reduces the scarring risk. As soon as we can fit you in — this treatment works best given early, while the lesion is still actively inflamed. Contact the clinic and we will do our best to see you promptly. Are there risks? The main recognised risk is a small dent or lightening of the skin at the injection site, caused by the medication thinning the tissue locally. It is uncommon with correct dilution and dosing, usually temporary, and Dr Selvi will explain it before treating. Can I have this repeatedly? Occasional use is appropriate. Frequent repeated injections in the same area are not, because of the risk of skin thinning. If you are getting recurrent cysts, that is a signal your underlying acne needs proper treatment rather than repeated rescue injections — and Dr Selvi will address that with you. Will the cyst come back? The injected lesion usually settles for good, but the underlying acne will continue producing new ones unless it is treated. This is a rescue treatment, not a cure. Will I need to change my skincare? Almost certainly, and this is often the most valuable part of the consultation. Many people with acne are using products that make it worse — heavy moisturisers, harsh scrubs, or over-cleansing that strips and inflames the skin. When would you refer me elsewhere? Severe nodulocystic acne, acne that is scarring, and acne that has not responded to appropriate treatment may need oral prescription therapy under dermatology supervision.
