Masseter (Jaw Muscle) — Consultation
Doctor consultation about the masseter (jaw) muscles, with treatment if appropriate.
Service Description
WHAT THE CONSULTATION COVERS A face-to-face consultation with Dr Selvi about the masseter muscles at the angle of the jaw. People book this for jaw clenching, teeth grinding or jaw tension, or for a concern about the width of the lower face where muscle bulk is a factor. Dr Selvi examines the muscles, asks about your symptoms and considers whether a prescription-only treatment is appropriate. Grinding, clenching and jaw pain should also be assessed by your dentist, and by your GP where appropriate. WHO IT MAY SUIT · Jaw clenching or teeth grinding · Jaw tension or tired jaw muscles · Concern about the width of the lower face related to muscle bulk · Wanting a doctor's view on the jaw before deciding anything WHAT HAPPENS IF TREATMENT IS APPROPRIATE If a prescription-only treatment is appropriate, Dr Selvi prescribes and administers it himself after a face-to-face assessment; if it is not, he will say so and discuss alternatives. If treatment is given, any effect usually begins within 1–2 weeks, is fully seen at around 4–6 weeks and typically lasts 4–6 months; the response varies between individuals. TREATMENT DETAILS Appointment: Up to 60 minutes Assessment: Face-to-face, including examination of the jaw muscles, medical history and medicines Downtime: Usually little or none; avoid chewing hard foods for 24 hours and strenuous exercise for a day FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS How is this different from the Teeth Grinding appointment? The Teeth Grinding appointment focuses on grinding and clenching. This appointment covers the masseter muscles more broadly, including contour concerns. If you are unsure, Dr Selvi will advise. What are the risks? Temporary redness, swelling, tenderness or bruising are common. Less commonly, chewing can tire more easily or the smile can look uneven for a few weeks. Rarely, part of the muscle can bulge when clenching. Will it change the shape of my face? It can change the contour of the lower face in some people, but the response varies. Dr Selvi discusses this with you so that it is an informed decision. Who is it not suitable for? Treatment is not given to anyone under 18, during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or with certain neuromuscular conditions or medicines. Dr Selvi checks this at the consultation. Who will treat me? All treatments at Dr Selvi Clinic are carried out by Dr Selvi, a doctor, after a face-to-face consultation and an assessment of your suitability. BOOKING Book online, or start with a free initial consultation if you are unsure which option is right for you. Prices are a guide and are confirmed after assessment.
