WHAT IT IS Medical microneedling at Dr Selvi Clinic in Brighton, also called collagen induction therapy, uses a device with fine sterile needles to create controlled micro-channels in the skin. This triggers the skin's natural repair response and supports collagen production — for acne scarring, uneven texture, enlarged pores and fine lines. Unlike home dermarollers, which use short needles that only affect the surface, a medical device allows the needle depth to be adjusted — up to 2.5mm — and is used under clinical conditions. Home devices use short needles that reach only the surface. Medical microneedling uses adjustable depths under sterile conditions, which allows deeper concerns such as scarring to be treated while managing the risk of infection. Does it hurt? Numbing cream is applied first. Most patients feel vibration, pressure and a scratching sensation rather than pain. How soon will I see results? The skin settles within a few days. Changes in texture and tone become more visible as collagen remodels over the following weeks and months. Can it be combined with PRP or exosomes? Yes. The micro-channels allow PRP or an exosome solution to be applied during the session. Dr Selvi will tell you whether a combination is worth it for your skin. Is it suitable for darker skin? Often, yes. It generally carries a lower risk of post-inflammatory pigmentation than some laser treatments, but depth and technique still need care, and Dr Selvi assesses your skin type and history first. Who should not have microneedling? It is not done over active acne, infection or cold sores, during pregnancy or breastfeeding, where there is a history of keloid scarring, or over an autoimmune skin condition affecting the area. Tell Dr Selvi about a recent course of prescription acne tablets, blood-thinning medicines or recent sunburn. What are the risks? Prolonged redness, temporary breakouts, small bruises and pigmentation change in darker or sun-exposed skin can occur. Infection is uncommon and is more likely if aftercare is not followed.
