WHAT IT IS Profhilo at Dr Selvi Clinic in Brighton is a doctor-led injectable treatment for skin quality. A highly concentrated hyaluronic acid spreads through the tissue to improve hydration, firmness and elasticity — for skin that has lost some bounce or looks crepey on the face, neck, décolletage or hands — without adding volume. Profhilo is used for bio-remodelling rather than volumising. It has no chemical cross-linking, so instead of holding its shape where it is placed, it disperses through the skin, drawing in water and stimulating the skin to improve its own quality over the following weeks. On the face it is placed at a small number of set points on each side. No. It works on the quality of the skin, not its shape. Because it spreads, it cannot be used to build a cheek or define a jawline. If that is what you want, a filler or a collagen biostimulator is the right tool, and we will say so. Will it make my face look fuller? No — that is the point of it. The improvement is in hydration, firmness and texture, not volume. When will I see a difference? Most people notice a change in skin quality a few weeks into the course, with the fuller effect at around eight weeks. Results build gradually rather than appearing immediately. Can Profhilo be used under the eyes? It is not the right product for the under-eye area, where its spreading behaviour is a disadvantage. Polynucleotides are usually considered there instead. Profhilo or polynucleotides? Neither is better; they do different jobs. Profhilo hydrates and mildly firms slightly loose skin. Polynucleotides support the repair of thin or damaged skin. Many patients have both, a few weeks apart, so the response to each can be judged separately. Who should not have Profhilo? It is avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding, where there is active infection at the treatment site, and where there is a known hypersensitivity to hyaluronic acid products. It will not correct volume loss and is not a substitute for treating pigmentation or acne scarring. What are the risks? Small bumps, redness, swelling, tenderness and bruising are common and settle. Less commonly, infection, persistent lumps or an allergic reaction can occur, and rarely an injection can affect a blood vessel. Dr Selvi explains the risks fully before you consent.
