WHAT IT IS Treatment of non-acne scarring — surgical scars, burn scars, trauma scars, caesarean and other operative scars — using the technique or combination appropriate to the scar's type, age, position and behaviour. Assessment comes first; the plan follows from it. WHY PEOPLE CHOOSE IT Scars from surgery, burns and injury behave differently from acne scarring and from each other. A raised hypertrophic scar needs a different approach from a stretched flat scar or a tethered one, and treating them all the same is why so many attempts disappoint. Most scars are best treated once mature, generally from around six months, though some — particularly scars showing early signs of becoming raised — benefit from earlier intervention. Dr Selvi will assess yours and advise on timing rather than treating too early. Can a scar be removed completely? No. A scar is permanent tissue change and cannot be erased. What treatment achieves is making it flatter, softer, closer in colour to the surrounding skin, and less noticeable. That is a worthwhile result, and it is the honest one. Will you treat keloid scars? Keloids need careful, specific management and can worsen with the wrong treatment. Dr Selvi will assess whether the scar is keloid or hypertrophic and will refer you where specialist management is more appropriate. Can old scars still be improved? Yes, often. Older scars generally improve more slowly and may need more sessions, but meaningful change is still achievable. Dr Selvi will give you a realistic assessment for your particular scar. Is scar treatment suitable for darker skin? Yes, with appropriate technique and settings. The main consideration is post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, which is more likely in richly pigmented skin. Dr Selvi may prime your skin, adjust the approach, or space sessions further apart. How important is sun protection? Critical. Daily broad-spectrum SPF 50 throughout the course and for months afterwards. Freshly treated skin pigments readily, and sun exposure is the most common cause of a disappointing scar treatment result.
