Teeth Grinding (Bruxism) — Consultation
Doctor consultation for teeth grinding and jaw clenching, with treatment if appropriate.
Service Description
WHAT THE CONSULTATION COVERS A face-to-face consultation with Dr Selvi about teeth grinding (bruxism) and jaw clenching. He asks about your symptoms — such as jaw ache, tension headaches or worn teeth — examines the jaw muscles, and considers whether a prescription-only treatment for the masseter (jaw) muscles is appropriate. Bruxism has several possible causes, including stress, sleep problems and dental factors, so it should also be assessed by your dentist, and by your GP where appropriate. A night guard from your dentist protects the teeth in a way that muscle treatment does not. WHO IT MAY SUIT · Grinding or clenching your teeth, during sleep or the day · Aching or tired jaw muscles, particularly on waking · A dentist having noticed wear on your teeth · Wanting a doctor's view on options alongside dental care WHAT HAPPENS IF TREATMENT IS APPROPRIATE If a prescription-only treatment is appropriate, Dr Selvi prescribes and administers it himself after a face-to-face assessment; if it is not, he will say so and discuss alternatives. Where treatment is given, any effect usually begins within 1–2 weeks, is fully seen at around 4 weeks and typically lasts 3–6 months; the response varies between individuals. TREATMENT DETAILS Appointment: Up to 60 minutes Assessment: Face-to-face, including your history, examination of the jaw muscles, medical history and medicines Downtime: Usually little or none; avoid chewing hard foods and strenuous exercise for 24 hours if treatment is given FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Will it stop me grinding? No one can promise that. Treatment does not address the underlying causes of grinding, and results vary. It is used alongside dental care, not instead of it. What are the risks? Temporary swelling, redness, tenderness or bruising are common. Less commonly, chewing can feel weaker or tire more easily, or the smile can look uneven for a few weeks. These effects are temporary. Can it change the shape of my face? Treating the masseter muscles can change the contour of the lower face in some people. Dr Selvi discusses this with you beforehand so that it is an informed decision. Do I still need to see my dentist? Yes. Your dentist can check your teeth and bite and provide a guard if needed. Persistent jaw pain, clicking or locking should also be assessed by your dentist or GP. Who will treat me? All treatments at Dr Selvi Clinic are carried out by Dr Selvi, a doctor, after a face-to-face consultation and an assessment of your suitability. BOOKING Book online, or start with a free initial consultation if you are unsure which option is right for you. Prices are a guide and are confirmed after assessment.
